Switch 2 Officially Revealed!
Nintendo has finally officially revealed the details on the next Switch console… Switch 2! We found out that the starting (pre-scalper) price of the new console is $449.99 USD. The screen is getting a nice bump over the original Switch at 7.9 inches (20.066cm) which is 1.7in (4.318cm) larger. There is not as much of a bump compared to the OLED model, which sits at 7.0in (17.78cm).
The larger screen size also allowed Nintendo bump up the resolution to 1080p. All 3 models of the original Switch were 720p. Switch 2 will also have a 120hz screen, improving smoothness of games that are optimized to utilize it. Unfortunately this model only sports an LCD panel rather than sticking with the much nicer OLED panels. However we could eventually see a Switch 2 OLED model. To go along with the larger screen, the whole chassis is slight larger, which also means the JoyCons have been given a size bump as well. Those of us with big hands appreciate this… trust me.
While the undocked console doesn't support 4k. Nintendo is claiming that the device will support 4k docked. It is left to be seen how many third-party developers will focus on optimizing their games for a device with a heavy focus on portability. Did we mention the JoyCons can act like a mouse? Some games will support the feature. We will have to wait and see how far they expand this. The built-in screen also supports HDR, which is a nice addition for content playback as well and the standard storage size is now 256gb. Which can hopefully not instantly be filled up by OS updates.
Another cool aspect of this refreshed console is the new chat features Nintendo is adding – new to the console not to the universe of course. They showed off video chats while playing games, which obviously means built in voice chat support. Hurray for not having to use your phone for voice chat anymore!
